RAY – Diary Entry Day 3
Well today we were up early and in for breakfast at 6:30am. We were keen to get started early knowing that we had a big day with lots of climbing but the temperature was only 3 degrees so we waited until 8 o’clock.
I was very cold for the first 15 km but got over that while climbing the Crown Range. Paul wanted to go into Arrowtown for coffee and I wanted to keep going and get up the hill. This gave me a good head start on him and I put the bike in my lowest gear and took my time. After 1hr 20min climbing I arrived at the top and was very pleased. The views at the summit were AWESOME, not a cloud in the sky and even saw a hot air balloon!
Looking at my Garmin I had realised that in 2 hours since I had started riding I had only traveled 30km with 105km left to go. The next 35 kms only took us about an hour being mostly down hill. We had a nice lunch and coffee in Wanaka, also a quick look around then back on our bikes. 65km to Makaroa into a tough head wind and very pleased to get here without being as wrecked as I was yesterday.
Time for a red wine and some food.
