Covid-19 Lockdown update. 07 April 2020
Turns out our industry is not immune the spread of essentialism. It seems that we could register to supply bike parts and some accessories online as essential. We have riders asking us to do this but we also feel a weight of responsibilty to do our bit to minimise the spread of a potentially deadly disease, and to ensure the past two weeks of pain haven’t been wasted.
When we are facing difficult decisions at Cycle World we look to our guiding principles for clarity however in this case there are several of our principles at odds. How can we care about our customers and our community while pushing the limits of this lockdown? How can we care about our team and our business while not bringing in any money at all?
Do the needs or wants of some of our customers outweigh the risks of sending people to work and couriers into the suburbs?
If there is a grey area in advice from the government and a grey area in our guiding principles then all we can do is what feels right.
We have talked about this extensively as a team and what feels right to us is to stay closed for the four weeks, only serving our essential workers who need their bike to look after us and our community.
We know to many of our riders a bike part is “essential” it’s a huge part of what makes us who we are and we can’t imagine our lives without bikes in them but are they essential in relative terms to a global pandemic? Relative to pharmacies and grocery stores? For the vast majority of us and our riders probably not.
This is tough, we want to be there for you whenever you need something and to be honest at this difficult time we could do with the money BUT our sincere hope is that if everybody acts in the most responsible way possible and works together on this we will save lives and we will make sure this four weeks is the only four weeks we ever have to face like this.
If you agree and you can wait then place an order on our online store and we will give you a gift voucher to the value of 10% of your purchase for parts and accessories and 5% of the value of any bike purchased (including items already on special) and we will send it (or give it to you) along with the goods when we are back.
This is one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make, we are risking our incomes, our jobs and our entire business by choosing this path. Our hope is that as many of you as possible unite with us in this and when we come out the other side we can get on with smashing our goals together.
Matt and on behalf of my family and the entire team at Cycle World Dunedin
